Vasectomy

Vasectomy in McKinney & Serving Melissa, TX

Once you establish that you don't want any more (or any) children, you have the option of a vasectomy to prevent pregnancy. And it's nearly 100 percent effective! Our trusted Dr. Alexander Martin, serving McKinney and Melissa, TX, and the nearby regions, is a skilled and experienced urologist who can help you decide if it's right for you and perform the procedure.

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy's purpose is to provide a permanent way to stop sperm from entering the semen by cutting and closing the vas deferens — the tube that transports sperm. Blocked vas deferens can't carry the sperm to the ejaculatory duct. For that reason, the sperm can't make it out of the body in semen to fertilize an egg. The doctor will perform it on each vas deferens during a vasectomy.

This procedure is nearly 100 percent effective. After it's initially completed, and at least two months have elapsed, there's no chance of impregnating a partner, though in rare cases, a tube can rejoin in the future.

Our Minimally Invasive Method

Rather than performing this procedure traditionally with a scalpel and a 1.5 to 3 cm incision, our urologist, serving McKinney and Melissa, TX, and the neighboring communities, can offer a no-scalpel vasectomy. This particular method doesn't come with the same bleeding risk or cause as high a chance of clotting. This version also requires less recovery time and is more comfortable.

To perform this procedure without needing to access the vas deferens surgically, our practitioner will use a needle to reach the vas deferens and snip. Our doctor will then seal it and return it to its initial location.

Because there's no incision, you won't need glue, bandages, or stitches. The procedure is relatively quick, usually taking only 15 to 20 minutes. The only anesthetic necessary for this procedure is a local. Therefore, you may return home immediately after the procedure.

Typically, you'll only need acetaminophen or an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to curb discomfort at home. You may also use an ice pack to ease swelling and/or pain. Moreover, you won't have any incisions to worry about, and the hole will close on its own.

You'll want to keep the area clean to prevent infection.

A vasectomy from Dr. Martinis a permanent form of birth control. Our urologist can even perform a minimally invasive vasectomy that doesn't require any incisions. Therefore, the recovery will be easy, and the risks are even lower than those from a standard vasectomy.
